Cinema: When Everything’s Going Wrong - And You’Re Laughing

Disaster Movie pokes fun at celebrities and movies.

Be among our lucky readers who get to watch Disaster Movie for free. Get your movie passes from the print edition of the New Straits Times of October 3.

IN the upcoming comedy Disaster Movie, the filmmaking team behind the hits Scary Movie, Date Movie, Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans this time puts its unique, inimitable stamp on one of the biggest and most costly movie genres of all time - the disaster film.

It follows the comic misadventures of a group of 20-somethings during one fateful night as every known natural disaster and catastrophic event - asteroids, twisters, earthquakes, the works - hit their path.

The spoof comedy stars Matt Lanter (CSI, Heroes), Vanessa Minnillo (F4: Rise of the Silver Surfer), Carmen Electra (Epic Movie, Date Movie) and Kim Kardashian (Deep in the Valley).

It all starts with a bizarre nightmare of Will’s (Matt Lanter) about a mysterious crystal skull predicting the end of the world. Armed with his father’s fedora and bullwhip, he begins his quest to find the skull and solve the mysteries.
Taking aim at everything and everyone, from films like Indiana Jones and Iron Man to celebrities including Amy Winehouse and Miley Cyrus, pop culture phenomenon Sex and the City and High School Musical, Disaster Movie doesn’t hold things back.

The film is written, directed and produced by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, with Peter Safran as a co-producer.

It will start screening from Thursday.

“Every possible disaster you can think of - both natural and man-made - that can occur in a day are included in the film,” said Friedberg.

“There is nothing too sacrosanct to poke fun at, be it a weather catastrophe or an egoistic individual. Everything is fair game,” he added.

The film opens with a parody of 10,000 BC by depicting a dim-witted prehistoric man running for his life from a dinosaur.

While trying to escape, he runs into Winehouse, whom he mistakes for a sabre-tooth tiger. She drunkenly removes a laptop from her beehive hairdo to check her Facebook profile.

Other outrageous spoofs include the cast breaking into a High School Musical-like performance and Cyrus in Hannah Montana being killed by a falling asteroid.

Said Lanter: “This is my first spoof movie, which I’ve always wanted to do, having grown up on movies like Hot Shots and the Naked Guns. They’re my favourite movies of all time. This is a dream come true.”

As for Electra, she felt lucky to be able to work with Aaron and Jason again.

“I’ve worked with them before on several occasions and so feel really comfortable doing this movie.”

’sex And The City’ Gets Teen Spin

NEW YORK: If you ever wondered whether Carrie Bradshaw was more of a mean girl or nerdy bookworm in high school, mark your calendars for 2010.

Candace Bushnell is currently writing a pair of teen novels called “The Carrie Diaries” which will show readers how the “Sex and the City” character got her start.

The novels will include her high school years, fashion throughout the years, and when she realised she would become a writer.

HarperCollins Publishers which has acquired world rights to “The Carrie Diaries”, will publish the first book in 2010.

Bushnell, in a statement issued by her publisher, said, “Carrie in high school did not follow the crowd - she led it. It was there that she began observing and commenting on the social scene.”

“Sex and the City” was the basis for the HBO television show and recent hit movie starring Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie.

Bushnell’s other books include “Four Blondes”, “Trading Up”, and “Lipstick Jungle”, which has also been made into a TV series of the same name.

“Lipstick Jungle” for which Bushnell is an executive producer, stars Brooke Shields, Kim Raver and Lindsay Price.

Dress Up For Hari Raya

Bring out the “Samantha” in you with off-the shoulder caftan in big floral “fil coupes” silk fabric by Rizalman.

With Hari Raya Aildilfitri approaching, Malaysian designers have come up with collections to celebrate the occasion. CHEONG PHIN and ZUHAILA SEDEK check out the looks from three local names.

Shu injects the can-can applique and uses laces for his modern kurung.

FASHION today is no longer confined to the two seasonal Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter collections.

In the months after Christmas, jet-setting women retreat to warmer shores like the Mediterranean to escape the wintry weather, soliciting a need for holiday clothes.

Hence a resort wear line is created to fill the void in fashion choices after the Winter collection.

Closer to home, the festive Syawal also conjures up a need to dress up for the traditional obligations, leading to special collections dedicated to the traditional values of Hari Raya.
Here are three such collections from distinguished local designers - Datuk Bernard Chandran, Rizalman Ibrahim and Michael Shu.

Inspired by Madame Gres (best known for her densely pleated, silk jersey “Goddess” gowns), Chandran takes his festive Petang Raya 2008 collection to a new dimension.

The traditional silhouettes of the baju kurung and the kebaya are combined with the anatomy of the classical couture look of the 80s to produce a collection with contemporary glamour and a colourful palette of lime green, blue, orange, shocking pink and champagne.

Chandran’s innovative technique of mixing and manipulating the dominant silk jersey fabric with organza, silk chiffon, lace and silk shantung is outstanding especially in creating structural forms out of soft chiffon.

The revolutionary voluminous sleeves from last season appear again in some unique lantern shapes and layers while the skirt structure takes different elegant forms from the effects of wrinkled pleating, flat pleats, double controlled pleats and flowing ruffles.

Embellishments are de rigueur in dressy baju kurung and kebaya and there are adequate touches of intricate beading, applique and hand-crafted accessories to add elegance to Chandran’s graceful feminine silhouettes.

Glamour reaches its peak on a few designs which were swathed in transparent sequins to produce a glass effect that shimmers with light at any angle.

While most of the designs are based on the two-piece baju kurung, there were some kaftans in silk which feature an unexpected low waist fastening and pleated sleeves.

“My aim is to create a seasonal trend in traditional fashion every year that is not too overly traditional but has a modern interpretation. I have designed it in such a way that it’s possible to wear the pieces separately,” said Chandran.

For Rizalman Ibrahim, stepping into the exclusive Italian fabric boutique Brenna of Italy is like a child in a candy store. Together, they produced an early Resort 2009 collection that was showcased in Carcosa Seri Negara recently.

Brenna of Italy produces fabrics for Elie Saab, Max Mara and Burberry, among others.

Rizalman Ibrahim is the first Malaysian designer working with it and the Resort collection proved a fruitful collaboration.

The looks, inspired by Sex and the City the movie, ranged from cocoon and lean shapes to elegant evening gowns in silk chiffon and billowing caftans in printed “fil coupes” silk.

Embellishments were applied sparingly and the collection had a delightful balance of elegance, lightness and appeal that showed the designer’s signature style and artistic use of the fine Italian fabric from Brenna.

Meanwhile, Pahang-born fashion designer Michael Shu, 32, also showcased his Raya Collection recently.

Coming from a family who is in the textile industry, the designer has, for the past 10 years, made batik his forte.

“Batik is a technique of dyeing fabrics in different colours. It is not about motifs or anything else.

People have been misguided when it comes to what batik is,” said the runner-up of the Piala Seri Endon 2004 competition.

He loves designing baju kurung. And his collection speaks for itself.

His baju kurung is rather different; it doesn’t come with the side-pleated sarong. Instead, the sarong to Shu’s baju kurung is flared, giving volume to an otherwise plain silhouette.

You can call it the “can-can” touch because like the fluffy skirt of can-can dancers, he uses net and organza to give it a puffy look.

Shu also uses lace, net and organza to bring out the transparent and subtle look of the motifs in his designs.

At first glance, the baju kurung looked like a blast from the past (specifically the 80s) but it is far from the bulky, padded look of those time.

He has also made jubah from batik to replace the plain ones we often see.

Even guys are not being left out this coming Raya with Shu’s simple yet elegant batik shirts using materials such as organza and silk shantung.

“Using organza for men’s wear is a challenge. But I want to prove that men too, can wear organza especially with batik designs on it,” he said.
