Mighty Quirky, Mighty Funny

SINGAPORE : Korean director Kwak Jae-Young, who’s most famously known for his Asian box-office hit, “My Sassy Girl”, has done it again.

In his latest big screen foray with “My Mighty Princess”, Kwak uses his same winning formula - a unique brand of Korean humour and fascination with girl-power - to produce another film which is unlike any other.

Adding extra punch (quite literally) is the film’s martial arts twist, which takes this part action, part romantic-comedy, past being another run of the mill tale.

The story revolves around a ‘mighty’ female protagonist Kang Sohwi (Shin Min-a), who unbeknownst to the world, is the only descendant of a prestigious wulin (martial arts) family, and a prodigy at that.

When she realises her super-human strength and martial arts prowess is scaring away people, including the man of her dreams - dashing ice-hockey captain Junmo (Yu-Gun) - she faces a difficult decision.

Should Sohwi embrace her martial arts destiny or give it all up for a regular college life that she so desires?

This is one movie that is so full of twist and turns, that when you think you might have figured out what’s going on, you realise you’re delightfully wrong.

Action junkies, would be glad to know too that the martial arts twist shows up the cast in many ‘Matrix’ reminiscent exploits while at the same time allowing intriguing flash backs to picturesque ancient Korea.

Another major plus to the movie has to be its ‘mighty’ fine looking cast which comprises the suave Caucasian looking Yu-Gun and the sprightly Shin Min-a, who embody their characters to the tee.

Also worth looking out for is On Ju-Wan, who plays Sohwi’s motorbike obsessed childhood friend, Cheon Ilyeong, who seems to bear a slight resemblance to Korean heart throb Rain.

While the leading cast provides the eye candy, it is the supporting cast that draws many of the laughs.

The Koreans have managed to work out just how make the most ridiculous, exaggerated jokes tastefully and genuinely funny. Fortunately, this knack continues in “My Mighty Princess” even though there were some corny moments which might leave you smirking for the wrong reasons.

Although the film ends with many loose ends untied, “My Mighty Princess” is still an extremely enjoyable watch where the plus points definitely trump the film’s weaknesses.
