Noel Gallagher - From Rock Star To Scriptwriter?

LONDON : Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher plans to team up with comedian Russell Brand to write material for sitcoms.

Gallagher, who is a frequent guest on Brand’s Radio 2’s show, said the collaboration would happen when he finally retires from making music.

“I’d like to be part of a team of scriptwriters. I think I’d be good. Russell has been trying to rope me into something but at the moment I can’t commit to anything outside Oasis. But, one day, who knows?”

Their chemistry apparently stems from their differences.

The controversial rock star said, “Russell’s a big posh Essex boy former junkie who’s been to the dark side and got into Hare Krishna. He’s never seen a council estate.”

“I’m a gruff Northerner who drinks Red Stripe. He finds that fascinating. He’s all ‘But Noel darling, don’t you believe in a higher existence?’ and I’m like, ‘Not dressed in a sheet banging a tambourine, you big Jessie’.”

It seems like Brand is equally appreciative of Gallagher.

The funnyman revealed that his reprisal of his role as singer Aldous Snow from “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” in a sequel will be based on Gallagher.

Brand said, “In ‘Get Him To The Greek’, Aldous is now back on drugs. With him being awful rather than clean I can use my friendships with British rock stars more successfully. Noel Gallagher will be a much better resource.”

The two pals have been in the spotlight recently for different reasons.

Gallagher was assaulted on stage during a concert in Toronto, while Brand was the host of the recent MTV Video Music Awards.

Not So Forgettable

SINGAPORE: We’ve all been there at least once in our lives: You’re in a blissful relationship, thinking everything is peachy-keen, when all of a sudden, BOOM! - your significant other needs a change. Needs to move on. Needs to break up with you.

Peter Bretter (Jason Segal) is the broken-hearted hack composer of TV scores who gets unceremoniously dumped by Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell), the blonde TV star he has been dating for five years.

After failing to one-night-stand his way out of depression, he heads to Hawaii. But, lo and behold, she is there with new boyfriend British pop star and vacuous poseur Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) in tow.

It’s the same old approach as far as most Judd Apatow-produced roll-outs are (Knocked Up, Superbad).

But the formula of taking a real-life situation and mixing raunchy humour and heartfelt sentiment gives this film empathy and realism.

The biggest laughs and most poig-nant moments in this M18-rated film come as its characters are caught at their most vulnerable.

Actor-writer Segal lets it all hang out, literally and emotionally, with a script that enlivens the occasional pedestrian scenarios with sharp verbal repartee and a hilarious encapsulation of the vulnerability that comes from being in love. He is never afraid to do whatever it takes to get laughs.

While it doesn’t quite achieve the comedic perfection of Superbad, especially with its thin structure and weak third act, there’s still enough potential in this first comedy collaboration between Segal and director Nicholas Stoller to make you look forward to more.

Sweet, funny and ultimately authentic, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, even with all the sex and nudity, never goes overboard as it never pulls its punches. -

MTV Still Wants A Piece Of Britney Spears

NEW YORK: Troubled pop star Britney Spears will have another chance to storm the MTV stage, after receiving a nomination for this year’s Video Music Awards.

Spears is no newcomer to stage blunders on the MTV Video Music Awards.

Five years ago, she shocked viewers when she locked lips with Madonna during a duet and last year, stylists bemoaned her disastrous fashion comeback attempt as she bared her belly and had her legs wrapped in fish-net stockings.

Let’s hope that she will not botch up this year’s performance.

Her video “Piece of Me”, which was filmed in Los Angeles in November 2007 showcases paparazzi photographers following her everywhere she goes and places her at the centre of media headlines, is in the running for the coveted Video of the Year award.

Ironically, Spear’s music career has been overshadowed in the last year or so by her erratic behaviour and legal battle with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, over custody of their two sons.

Thankfully, Spears appears to have been getting her act together since her father was named conservator of her affairs, following her treatment for psychiatric issues earlier this year.

She also reached a settlement with Federline last week regarding custody of her children.

The pop princess, who is facing tough competition from Katy Perry with “I Kissed a Girl”, Rihanna’s “Take A Bow”, Jordin Sparks’ “No Air” and Mariah Carey’s “Touch My Body”, was also rumoured to be opening the event again this year.

According to a source quoted by the Mirror, “They are going to leave it up until the week before to decide. But they can only advise her - Brit will do her own thing.”

This year marks the first time that the fans will select nominees - and the eventual winners - via online voting.

Singapore viewers can catch MTV’s 25th annual Video Music Awards cable channel MTV Asia on Monday, September 8, at 9.30pm.

The event will be hosted by controversial comedian/actor Russell Brand, best known to American audiences as the star of “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”.
